The issue of fire protection in high rise buildings, and particular those living in multi-storey social housing developments, was bought into focus by the devastating impact of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.
Seventy one people lost their lives after fire broke out at Grenfell on June 14, 2017, a 24-storey building which only had one stairwell. The building did not have a sprinkler system fitted.
London Fire Brigade Commissioner Dany Cotton insists sprinklers would have undoubtedly saved lives at Grenfell, and she believes sprinklers should now be retrofitted to all high-rise social housing developments.
Tower blocks built before 2007 were not required by law to include sprinklers – and it has been estimated only 2% of the UKs 4,000 tower blocks, or multi-dwelling units of six storeys, are fitted with sprinklers.
This leaves more than a million people vulnerable to the risk of fire.
Every project presents unique challenges, but as a guide our work to retrofit fire sprinkler systems to each residential property should be completed within five days.

Protect 24 will perform a three stage installation service.
This begins with the installation of a plant room, primary vertical and horizontal pipework to each floor level, the communal areas and then into residents apartments.
Every property is different but, as a guide, we require five days access to individual apartments.
Day 1: Protect24 require two-to-three hours to drill holes in the rooms where sprinklers will be fitted.
Day 2: Engineers require access for a full day to install horizontal pipework to every room – along with sprinkler heads.
Day 3: Engineers will conduct testing and commissioning of the pipework. This takes around two hours.
Day 4: Protect24 engineers will require a full day to conceal the installed pipework with pre-formed covers
Day 5: With the work completed the Protect24 team will complete a final check and full handover, commissioned and certified by the FIRAS, with the completed installation submitted to the landlord.
Protect24 take care of on-going maintenance through bi-annual servicing, along with instructed monthly visual inspection.
