Residents directly affected by Grenfell Tower will decide on the site’s future.

The government has announced that those affected by the tragedy, including survivors, bereaved families and members of the community will consider what happens next.

A set of written principals about what happens has been agreed between the government, Kensington and Chelsea Council and the survivors.

The guidelines state those affected by the disaster will be given a veto on all future decisions, equivalent to a 50% representative vote.

Shanin Sadafi, chair of the survivor group Grenfell Tower, said the future of the site had been a “major source of anxiety…because it is the final resting place of the loved ones we lost.”

He said: “We hope working together to create a fitting memorial will be part of a healing process for everyone affected.”

Seventy-one people lost their lives after a fire broke out at Grenfell Tower on June 14, 2017. The fire was accelerated by cladding fitting to the exterior of the building. Crucially, there were no sprinklers fitted.

Protect24 was launched in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower disaster with the aim of providing fire protection measures for social housing.

The Protect24 team retrofit fire sprinkler systems for local authorities and social housing association, driven by the desire to make sure a tragedy like Grenfell can never happen again.
